Chipsets for the Athlon 4
Taiwanese chipset manufacturers have already received the first samples of the new Athlon 4 processor with 1.4 and 1.5 GHz. This is necessary so that you can start working on the corresponding chipsets. In just a month, or so at least AMD hopes, the manufacturers should have managed to get the first chipsets and mainboards for the Athlon 4 ready for series production.
Also in the package were supposedly samples of the new Duron (Morgan) with 800 and 850 MHz. Both the Athlon 4 and the new Duron continue to use Socket A and are therefore also compatible with the previous mainboards, but the new processors use some previously functionless pins that have to be supported by the new mainboards. Among other things, this involves the dynamic adjustment of the clock frequency and the associated reading of the internal CPU temperature, as well as the new power-saving technology PowerNow!
