CES: 2 GB burner announced by TDK

TDK announced a CD/RW burner at CES that can write 2 GB of uncompressed data on a special blank disc. TDK had already presented this technology in August 2001 and has now developed it further to readiness for series production.

The large amount of data is made possible by a multilayer (ML) read and write head. This can process normal CD/R and CD/RW blanks as well as special TDK ML-R and ML-RW blanks. The device works at 36x speed and creates a CD with 2 GB of data in about 6 minutes. CD/RWs are written at 24 times the speed, the reading speed of the device is 40 times the speed. In the US, the burner is expected to go on sale in the second quarter for US $ 199, while the media certified by TDK for 2 GB will be US $ 1.99 (ML-R) and US $ 2.99 (ML -RW).
