CD-R with 2 gigabytes
This year, TDK, together with Calimetrics, wants to bring a new CD recording format onto the market, which enables three times the amount of data to be stored on a CD and also enables 36 times the writing speed.
According to the manufacturer, the new drives should be able to read the previous CDs and also be able to write to normal CD-R and CD-RW media. Up to now, the data have been saved by changing the reflection properties of the data carrier, whereby a distinction is made between two levels of brightness. With the new multilevel recording (ML-Recording) technology, however, eight levels are to be distinguished, whereby more storage capacity is available on the data carrier. The first prototypes are due to hit the market this year and are only slightly more expensive than the current CD writers.
