ATI's future plans

The ATI Radeon256 has not even been released to the public when the first information about the successor graphics chips is already emerging. The interesting thing is that at the time of the release of the Radeon256 at the end of this month, test chips for the successor with the code name Sidewinder will be ready.

Production should then start 3 months later. Here are all the facts at a glance:

  • Code name: Sidewinder
  • 300MHz Core
  • 60 million triangles/sec.
  • 1.8 GPixels/sec.
  • 0.18µm production
  • Sample: July 2000
  • Start of production: Nov 2000

Code name: Stinger

  • 400MHz core
  • improved render architecture
  • 0.15 µm production
  • Samples: Q1'2001
  • Start of production: Q2'2001

Whether it means anything that the code names of the new chips all come from rockets
