ATi Radeon HD 3870 in the test: A new name alone is not enough

Other

Volume

Since almost all current models have a manufacturer-side Fan control, we distinguish between 2D and 3D operation when taking measurements. For the load measurements, the 3DMark06 is executed in an endless loop and the volume is noted after thirty minutes. Both measurements are carried out at a distance of 15 cm from the graphics card. In order to only be able to measure the volume of the respective graphics card, the case fans were disconnected from the mains during the test. The measurement is carried out for the entire test system.

The GeForce 8800 GT was already able to set records in terms of volume and it seemed almost impossible that ATi would achieve something similar with the Radeon HD 3000 series. Especially when you consider that the Radeon HD 2900 XT was really no quiet step and that the fan built into the Radeon HD 3870 on the Radeon X1950 XTX has already caused some annoyed players. But with the Radeon HD 3870 ATi shows that there is another way - and even better than Nvidia did with the GeForce 8800 GT!

Under Windows, the PowerColor card holds back with a measured value of 47.5 decibels (other components of the test computer are louder in this case than the graphics card) and cannot be seen from a closed case. Quiet work is possible without any problems. But even under load, the Radeon HD 3870 keeps its nerve and achieves exactly the same measured value as in 2D mode. Congratulations, ATi, because this is a new record in our laboratory! The PowerColor Radeon HD 3870 is the quietest graphics card with a built-in fan that was ever featured in our test course. The 3D accelerator is suitable for a silent PC without restriction.

However, we would like to point out that the difference in volume compared to the GeForce 8800 GT with the standard clock rates is at best measurable. By just listening we could at least not notice any difference. Both test candidates are too quiet for that.
