Already the ATi The Radeon HD 3870 was able to achieve impressive results in the measurements of the power consumption due to the new energy-saving mechanism and the Radeon HD 3850 is in no way inferior to its bigger brother - it even goes one better. Since the clock rates (under load) are lower and the memory has been halved, the Radeon HD 3850 is satisfied with even less performance. Under Windows, we were able to measure a low power consumption of 161 watts for the entire system, which is six watts below the values ​​of a Radeon HD 3870 and means second place in our test course. Only the significantly slower Radeon HD 2400 XT can top this. Very good ATi! The rest of the competition cards, on the other hand, are miles behind and do not stand a chance against the Radeon HD 3850. The GeForce 8800 Ultra even needs 92 watts more - for the proverbial doing nothing.

Since the energy-saving system logically no longer works under load, the measured values ​​are a lot worse in this discipline despite the 55 nm process. The Radeon HD 3850 still achieved a good result - in relative terms. The graphics card and the rest of the system draw 231 watts from the socket and can therefore place itself in the middle of the field. With 252 watts, the Radeon HD 3870 requires a good 24 watts more power. The GeForce 8600 GTS is a little more frugal when playing a 3D application, while the GeForce 8800 GT (with a noticeably better performance) needs more power.

In conclusion, the Radeon HD 3850 can be unreservedly recommended . The power-saving mode of the GPU is very effective and shows which way future graphics cards have to take.
