ATi Radeon HD 3850 in the test: Another price-performance hit?

Temperature

The temperature measurements are carried out in a similar way to the volume measurements. Almost all current graphics cards have sensors that are read out by a driver or manufacturer toolcan. The core temperature is read on the Windows desktop in idle mode and 3DMark06 after thirty minutes under load. We also use an infrared thermometer to measure the chip temperature on the back of the graphics card.

The quieter the graphics card, the more difficult it is to keep the GPU cool. Often you can help yourself with complex and large cooling constructions - but the Radeon HD 3850 does not have both. That is why we assumed even before the measurement that the graphics card would be warmer than a Radeon HD 3870 despite the lower clock rates - and we should be right. However, the only differences aremarginal. We were able to measure a good 49 degrees Celsius under Windows, two degrees more than with a Radeon HD 3870. The 3D accelerator achieves a very good result, which can be explained by the effective energy-saving mode.

Under load The RV670-GPU on the Radeon HD 3850 with 89 degrees Celsius is one degree warmer than that of the Radeon HD 3870. Despite the modern 55 nm process, the heat development has not improved, and the measured temperatures are not a problem for a modern GPU . A GeForce 8800 card remains noticeably cooler despite the old 90 nm design, although the cooling system is significantly larger and more complex. We were able to record 69 degrees in the measurements on the back of the chip, again one degree more than with a Radeon HD 3870.
