Athlon 4 unleashed
Heise Online has succeeded in unlocking the '3DNow! Professional' instruction set implemented in the new Athlon 4 processors (mixture of AMD's 3DNow! and Intel's SSE instruction set extensions), which is still deactivated in early prototypes of the chip. So far only the old 3DNow! Instructions could be addressed. A Mobile Athlon 4 1GHz CPU was modified, which was able to record a significant increase in performance.
It is more designed for graphics cards 3D Mark 2001 the gain of almost 3% was still quite moderate, but other applications were able to benefit significantly more from the additional commands with 9% (CPU 3D Mark), 134% (apple man) and 51% (BAPCo PS5). Only the BAPCo WMP5 (Windows Media Encoder) recorded a performance drop of -20%. With this program, the 3DNow! Optimization used seems to work better than SSE support. The remaining benchmarks clearly show the potential of AMD's new '3DNow! Professional' technology when it meets SSE-hand-optimized software. In view of these facts, further optimized programs will certainly not be long in coming.
