Quake III Arena

Quake 3 Arena only uses OpenGL for graphic display. The first person shooter is characterized by a relatively high number of polygons and extremely fast game play. From a resolution of 1024x768x32, the memory bandwidth of the graphics card is requiredespecially high. The test was carried out with the Point Release 1.30 and the 'Four' demo contained therein exclusively with a maximum quality that can be set in the menu.

'Bang!' we thought, what did we do wrong that the cards are so close together, especially in the very frame-rate friendly Quake III Arena? The answer is fairly simple: In contrast to a few other well-known websites, we test (except for vSync) the way we play. This means that the sound remains switched on, even if, like here, it costs 25% of the power. 'To blame' for this result is to a large extent the onboard sound, which, calculated by the CPU, costs twice the bandwidth in this way and that in a multiple of the amount that it would use in normal game operation. In Quake III Arena the time demo runs as fast as the computer can show it, as many are sure. No sound effects are left out, so that with an assumed five times the playback speed there is also five times the load caused by the sound.

This means that the GeForce4 Ti cards can only settle relatively late.

Serious Sam

Serious Sam is also a popular OpenGL first person shooter with its own 3D engine. The benchmarking script 32 Bit HQ ++ from 3DCenter was used for testing (all 32 Bit Max, 32 Bit textures, etc.). The demo was a 'Peaceful Night in Karnak'.

Even in the, compared to Quake III Arena, significantly more demanding scenario that Serious Sam offers even in the first version, the V8460 ultra and the V8440 from Asus a safe start-to-finish victory, but this time with a clear margin from the lowest resolution tested. As in Quake III Arena, the serious Samuel thirsts more for memory bandwidth than anything else, and the GeForce4 Ti products are able to deliver that.
