Are the new AMDs compatible?
The xBit Labs asked themselves whether the newer CPUs from AMD are compatible with older mainboards, and therefore asked AMD. A BIOS update and a supported voltage regulator are required for the operation of newer AMD CPUs.
For the new Athlon from 1.5GHz with Palomino core, support of a 266MHz FSB is still required, which is supported by boards with the VIA KT133A, AMD-760 or ALi MAGiK 1 chipset is supplied. The Duron from 900MHz are delivered with the Morgan core and should also run in older boards with 200MHz FSB. The new cores are needed to achieve a higher clock frequency with lower power consumption and less heat generation. The production of the new CPUs should start in the 2nd quarter of 2001.
