AMD acquires Alchemy Semiconductor

AMD announced today that it has acquired Alchemy Semiconductor. Alchemy Semiconductor is a privately held company that develops and sells low-power processors for communication devices. These include PDAs, portable and wired Internet access devices and gateways.

'By joining forces between AMD and Alchemy, both companies can lay the foundations for the communication of the future - computer solutions from Alchemy in combination with wired and wireless Technologies and flash memory from AMD. Alchemy's MIPS architecture-based solutions offer an ideal combination of high performance and low power consumption for Internet access devices. '

AMD has established the Personal Connectivity Solution division to target products for to offer non-PC-bound components. As in the future, AMD processors will also be able to see in devices other than the notebook or computer at home.
