400MHz graphics memory from Samsung
Samsung yesterday presented its new 128bit DDR-SDRAM chip for graphics cards. With a clock frequency of 400 MHz and double data rate technology, two data packets can be transmitted simultaneously per clock. So one can speak of an effective memory clock of 800 MHz.
The fastest memories are currently installed in the ATI Radeon 8500 with 550 MHz and soon in the GeForce4 Ti4600 with 650 MHz. With an access time of 2.5 ns and a memory bandwidth of 12.8 GB/s, this is an increase of 60% compared to a currently available GeForce3 Ti500. Mass production of the chips is planned for the second quarter of 2002. According to its own information, Samsung now has a market share of 80% in DDR RAM chips.
