0.13 µm processors as early as 2001

TSMC has successfully started the 0.13 µm manufacturing process. It is now expected that this will be used extensively for the production of processors at the end of 2001.

Only recently TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) delivered the first 0.15 µm chips to customer Altera . Now comes the message that the 0.13 µm process has been successfully started. All metal layers are made of copper and not like the competition, where only the top layers are made of copper. By the 3rd quarter of 2001 the process is going to be ready for the mass market. This would make it possible to use much faster CPUs that consume significantly less power and therefore require less cooling.
